The HSBC Hong Kong Lions are among the city’s most recognizable and enduring landmarks, standing proudly at the entrance of HSBC’s headquarters in Central. Cast in bronze and named Stephen and Stitt, the lions have become powerful emblems of protection, prosperity, and resilience. Their origins trace back to the early 20th century, when similar lions were installed at HSBC’s Shanghai and London offices. The Hong Kong pair arrived in 1935, quickly becoming beloved fixtures of the city’s urban landscape.
Each lion carries its own personality: Stephen, with his mouth open, symbolizes vigilance and courage, while Stitt, calm and composed, represents stability and confidence. Over the decades, they’ve witnessed Hong Kong’s transformation—from colonial port to global financial hub—and have themselves become woven into local culture. Many residents and visitors rub the lions’ paws for good luck, a tradition that has polished the bronze to a shine.
