1. Essential Documents & Entry

  • Passport and Visa: Ensure your passport is valid for at least one month beyond your intended stay.

    • Visa: Many nationalities can visit Hong Kong visa-free for periods ranging from 7 to 180 days (e.g., US, UK, and Australian citizens often get 90 days). Always check the latest visa requirements for your specific nationality and trip duration on the official Hong Kong Immigration Department website.

  • Travel Insurance: Highly recommended to cover unexpected medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or baggage loss.

  • Copies: Have digital and/or physical photocopies of your passport, visa, and insurance details separate from the originals.

  • Onward/Return Ticket: You may be asked for evidence of onward or return transportation upon entry.

2. Money and Connectivity

  • Currency: The official currency is the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD). Credit cards and mobile payments (like Octopus, Alipay) are widely accepted, but cash is still handy for small vendors, markets, and some local restaurants.

  • Octopus Card: This is highly recommended! It's an indispensable rechargeable smart card for the MTR (train system), buses, ferries, trams, and can also be used in convenience stores, fast-food outlets, and more. You can buy one at the airport or any MTR station.

  • Connectivity: Arrange for a local SIM card or an eSIM for reliable internet access and navigation. Wi-Fi is available in many public places, but a personal connection is best for travel.

  • Power Adapter: Hong Kong uses the Type G (UK-style three-pronged) and sometimes the older Type D power sockets. The standard voltage is 220V at 50Hz. You will need a plug adapter, and possibly a voltage converter if your device is not dual-voltage (check your appliance for 'INPUT: 100-240V').

3. Health and Comfort

  • Medication: Bring an adequate supply of any prescription medication, kept in its original packaging, along with your doctor's prescription. Pack a basic health kit with common remedies like painkillers and stomach tablets.

  • Comfortable Shoes: You will be doing a lot of walking, both in the city and potentially on its many excellent hiking trails. Supportive, comfortable walking shoes are a must.

  • Clothing (Seasonal):

    • Summer (June - September): Hot and very humid. Pack lightweight, breathable, moisture-wicking clothes.

    • Winter (December - February): Mild days but can be cool and windy, maybe there will be maximum one week dropping below 10∘C. A light jacket or sweater is usually sufficient, but a heavier jacket might be needed for a cold snap.

    • Year-Round: Air conditioning is often set very high in malls and on public transport, so a light jacket or scarf is useful even in summer.

  • Rain Gear: Sudden downpours are common, especially in the wetter seasons (spring/summer). A compact umbrella or light rain jacket is a great idea.

  • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen are essential for protection against strong UV rays.

  • Paper Tissues: Good to have, as most restaurants don’t provide them, but most public restrooms are fully stocked.

4. Local Awareness

  • Typhoon Season: Be aware that the main typhoon season is generally from May to November. Familiarize yourself with Hong Kong's typhoon warning signals, which are widely reported in the media and on the official weather app.

  • Pace of Life: Hong Kongers are known for walking quickly. Try to keep to the side on escalators (usually the right, but follow local custom) and avoid standing in busy walkways.
